Mercedes Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR) Practice Exam

Preteaching vocabulary is particularly effective for English Language Learners (ELL) because it allows the words to be introduced in a less structured context, creating a more comfortable and engaging learning atmosphere. This approach enables students to familiarize themselves with new vocabulary in a way that connects to their prior knowledge and experiences.

By presenting vocabulary in a more relaxed setting, students can explore the meanings and usage of words without the pressure of immediate assessment or formal testing. This can involve activities such as interactive discussions, visuals, or contextual examples that make the vocabulary more accessible and memorable. It also encourages language acquisition by allowing students to construct meanings collaboratively, thus improving their confidence and willingness to communicate in English.

While other instructional strategies may support vocabulary acquisition, the key advantage of this less formal context is that it helps ELL students feel more at ease, ultimately enhancing their understanding and retention of new language concepts.
